Thanksgiving is a time to remember what we are thankful for, and it's also the beginning of a wonderful season of giving. Most people have already begun filling their homes with the electronics, jewelry, toys, and clothes they will pass around to their loved ones on Christmas.
We look forward every year to giving and receiving gifts, but how often do we think of the millions around the world who don't have access to many of the basic things that we take for granted daily? How often do we take steps to make their lives better?
In Mozambique, there are children wishing for the chance to go to school and get an education. In this developing country, most children who finish primary school finish without basic literacy and numeracy skills, a problem due in large part to a lack of the early childhood education that prepares children for the primary school curriculum.
Studies have shown that early childhood is the most important period of development in a person's life. Children's experiences in these formative years shape their lives for years to come, and greatly influence their ability to learn in school as they grow older.
For this reason, Planet Aid and ADPP Mozambique, together with the Ministry of Education of Mozambique, have started the 70 Preschools Project. The project aims to establish 70 new preschools in southern Mozambique and provide community-based early childhood development services. In just the last year, the project has built 23 new preschools, but they still need a lot basic materials like desks and teaching materials.
You can be a part of this life-changing initiative. You can give the gift of education.
Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving to those in need, is right around the corner. This year, please consider supporting the 70 Preschools Project. Your donation will help give children in Mozambique the educational foundation they need to succeed in primary school. Contributions go toward building new schools, training teachers, and purchasing educational materials. Keep up with the project through pictures and videos on our Facebook page.
