UPDATE: The White House has encouraged Americans to give generously to the Philippine relief effort, and announced a new website where citizens can give to reputable, experienced humanitarian aid organizations, which lists members of Interaction.

Planet Aid encourages everyone concerned about the crisis in the Philippines to support our colleagues at InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) focused on relief and development work. A list of reputable and experienced disaster relief organizations you can donate to who are responding to the crisis is available at InterAction.org.

Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda is the most powerful typhoon ever recorded. The need for life-saving emergency assistance is significant, with the United Nations reporting nearly 9.8 million people affected by the storm, more than 659,000 displaced, and possibly as many as 10,000 people killed in one city alone. About 2.5 million people are in need of food, according to UN estimates.
