Planet Aid and partners get ready for the 9th annual Free Coat Giveaway in Rochester, NY
Each year Planet Aid partners with Ibero-American Action League for its annual Free Coat Giveaway in Rochester, NY. On Saturday, November 19 at 11 am, coats will be distributed at the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, located at 27 Zimbrich St., Rochester, NY. 14621.
Planet Aid makes Rochester-area bins available for coat donations up to the day before the giveaway. Some volunteers organize coats—by size—for men women, and children, then others distribute coats at the event while supplies last.
Coat donations help recipients keep warm during the winter months. Additionally, the contribution also helps lift a financial burden.
In 2021, New York State Senator Samra Brouk, awarded Planet Aid and Ibero Action League with citations for the annual coat giveaway
Rochester, New York, is the fifth poorest city among 75 of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States. The less-than-desirable distinction comes with its own burdens. Many residents struggle to afford necessities like coats, food, or healthcare.
The city also experiences an average snowfall between 70 and 90 inches each year, making a coat essential for everyone especially children. According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau, the poverty rate for children in Rochester is 48.2 percent. Although it has decreased by almost three percent, it is still a very high number.
